(AP) -- JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri Republican lawmakers are pushing back against President Barack Obama's gun control plans by proposing to expand gun rights in Missouri.

Guns have been at the forefront of a national debate after deadly mass shootings. Obama wants to place more restrictions on ammunition and ban assault rifles. But Missouri Republicans are looking to nullify federal gun control laws and expand concealed weapons.

One measure would lower the age to get a concealed gun permit to 19 instead of the current 21. Other proposals would criminalize the enforcement of any federal law enacted after Jan. 1 that restricts gun ownership.

Democrats have also joined the gun debate in Missouri. Their proposals would place some restrictions on weapons but stop short of what Democrats in Washington have proposed.
