COLUMBIA, MO -- In observance of the late Martin Luther King Jr., the city of Columbia celebrated the man with a dream with an honorary Poor People's Breakfast at the St. Luke United Methodist Church from 8 a.m. to noon today.

The NAACP held an observance at the MLK Memorial on Stadium Drive, followed by a motorcade to Second Missionary Baptist Church on east Broadway.

Between 300 and 400 Westminster College students and community members spent the day packing bags of food for school children in need.

The college partnered with the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri to fill 1,728 packs. They will be distributed to children who receive free or reduced-priced school lunches.

In Columbia later on, Parks and Recreation and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Association held a candlelight walk from Douglass High School to Second Missonary Baptist Church.

The church held a memorial service called "Passing on the Dream," and also distributed annual Dr. King awards.
