MOBERLY, Mo. (AP) -- University of Missouri system president Tim Wolfe was in Moberly to start a tour aimed at promoting the importance of higher education.

Wolfe kicked off the "Show Me Value" tour in the Moberly High School gym with an audience from the nearby middle school. The statewide tour is aimed at promoting higher education to Missouri residents, particularly to those who live outside the state's major cities.

University officials say Wolfe wants to combat what he sees as a growing national sentiment that devalues the benefits of a four-year college degree and suggests more students should enter the workforce sooner.

Wolfe told the crowd he was an unfocused student who cared more about football and girls before committing to working hard in the classroom.
