Residents in tornado-ravaged Joplin are being asked to help design bow ties that will be hawked to raise money for an arts center and ongoing recovery efforts.

The Joplin Globe reports that BowTie Cause is partnering with Joplin's George A. Spiva Center for the Arts for the effort.

BowTie Cause was founded by former NFL linebacker Dhani Jones. The charity has designed signature ties for more than 80 organizations around the country, including the Ronald McDonald House.

Jones says the Joplin bow tie will be unique because the winning design ultimately will come from a Joplin resident. People can submit their ideas during a fun competition Thursday.

Proceeds from the bow tie sales will be shared between Rebuild Joplin and the arts center.
