A part-time student shot a financial adviser on the fourth floor of a downtown St. Louis school Tuesday afternoon. He then shot himself in the chest.

Authorities found the shooter in a stairwell between the third and fourth floors.

Both the shooter and the victim were taken to SLU Hospital.

Police said the shooter's injuries did not appear to be fatal, while the condition of the victim, who is a long-time employee in his late 40s, is unknown. Police say both are in surgery at this time and that both are expected to survive.

The shooting occurred at about 2 p.m. at the Stevens Institute of Business and Arts in the 1500 block of Washington, near 15th Street, at about 2 p.m.

Everyone was evacuated from the building and SWAT units are checking the school to ensure it's empty. Washinton Avenue was completely shut down, starting at 14th Street through 18th Street.

A motive is not yet known, although authorities said the victim knew the shooter well.

More details will be posted here as they become available.
