COLUMBIA -- The 16th President of Columbia College announced his retirement Thursday morning.

After nearly 18 years at the helm of the school, Dr. Gerald Brouder will step down on August 1.

Brouder made his announcement during an emotional ceremony Thursday morning on the Columbia College Campus.

Administrators said Brouder has seen Columbia College through tremendous growth and change since taking office in 1995.

Under Brouder’s leadership, Columbia College has become more technologically advanced, particularly in the areas of science and mathematics.

“For your contributions and your dedication to this college, I am truly grateful," Brouder said.  "It has been my honor and a distinct privilege as your President.  Thank you very much.”

Brouder said he is good health as he approaches his 70th birthday.

Members of the Columbia College Board of Trustees are in the process of forming a search committee to find their next president.
