A local organization designated by the State of Missouri to provide energy assistance to low income families and individuals is out of federal funding.

Central Missouri Community Action ran out of federal money for their Winter Crisis Utility Assistance Program, so the organization will be unable to provide crisis assistance to families who have received a disconnect notice from their primary heating source provider.

The funds assisted more than 2,600 families in Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau and Osage counties.

A one-time energy assistance program is still available to families that qualify.

However, it’s not just about heat. Many people also need power for life-sustaining medical equipment.

Energy Coordinator Melody Rodriguez said, “I’ve been yelled at. I received several threatening e-mails from upset people who can’t receive assistance. I also had to layoff three of my main employees on Monday."

Rodriguez is contacting members of Congress and the Missouri Legislature to help with additional funding for her mid-Missouri energy crisis program.
