A 26-year-old Jefferson City man ran from police, then tried to fight them off when they caught him in an alley.

When officers stopped a suspicious vehicle in the West Main/Berry Street area Tuesday, the passenger, Maurice Rollins, got out and approached them. They tried to question him, but he first walked and then ran away.

Officers pursued, catching Rollins in the alley between Brooks and Berry streets. Rollins was taken into custody after hitting and punching the officers, who did not receive treatment for their injuries.

Rollins had almost half a gram of heroin packaged for sale. He was arrested for possession of heroin with intent to distribute, assault on a law enforcement officer and felonious resisting arrest. He was taken to the Cole County Jail, pending charges.
