He assaulted a Pulaski County deputy while trying to escape from the sheriff's office
A man arrested for slashing a woman's car tires is also apparently responsible for several thefts in the Route Y area.
Early Sunday morning, a Pulaski County deputy went to a home on Hemmingway Lane for a reported trespass in progress. The homeowner told the deputy that she heard someone try to open her screen door, then saw a man in her fenced-in backyard. The man, who told her his name was Traven, left when she told him to go. As the deputy left, the homeowner noticed a tire on her car was flat from a knife puncture.
Another deputy knew of Traven – identified as 19-year-old Traven Atterberry of St. Robert – and was able to stop a Plymouth Neon driven by him near the Hemmingway Lane residence. During the stop, Atterberry reached under the front seat, so the deputy took him out of the car. The deputy then found a knife with rubber on it under the front seat.
Atterberry was arrested for tampering with a vehicle and the Plymouth was impounded.
A search of the Plymouth turned up property that belongs to individuals who live in the Route Y area. After contacting several of these people, authorities determined that the property found had been taken in car break-ins.
While at the sheriff's office for questioning, Atterberry assaulted a deputy while trying to escape.
The county prosecutor filed one felony count of tampering with a motor vehicle, one felony count of attempted escape from custody, and one felony count of receiving stolen property. Bond was set at $100,000. Atterberry remains in the Pulaski County Jail pending the posting of bond. Authorities anticipate that additional charges will be filed after further investigation.
Pulaski County deputies still have property belonging to individuals living in the Hardwood Road area of Route Y who they have been unable to contact. If you live on or near Hardwood Road and are missing any property, call the Pulaski County Sheriff’s office at 573-774-6196.
