Thousands of people are giving up a few minutes of their time and a few drops of their blood to help save lives at the 27th Annual Mizzou Homecoming Blood Drive.

Organizers want to collect 5,000 pints of blood by Thursday night.

On Monday, they collected more than a thousand units.

The Mizzou blood drive is happening at the Hearnes Center Field House on the MU Campus.

Fraternity and sorority members are usually the largest contributors to the drive.

Red Cross volunteers depend on Mizzou students and faculty for their success.

However, they say it takes the entire community to meet their goal.

American Red Cross Spokesman Dan Fox said, “The entire Boone County community has been fantastic about, not only supporting the drive with area businesses and whatnot, but the donors coming out and donating the gift of life.  We have a great response from the entire community.  We’re really thankful for that.”

The Mizzou Homecoming Blood Drive is open to the public between 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. between now and Thursday.
