(AP) -- CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. (AP) -- Officials in a southeastern Missouri city have quickly reversed their ban on door-to-door trick-or-treating. But children in Caruthersville will have to be accompanied by an adult when they go roaming for candy on Halloween.

The city council voted Wednesday night to prohibit trick-or-treating, citing concerns about children's safety on busy streets and the safety of residents in their homes. As an alternative, officials urged families to enjoy a "Trunk or Treat" event at Caruthersville's Public Safety Center.

Reaction was swift, and by Thursday afternoon, city leaders decided the door-to-door candy quest can go on, as long as children have a responsible adult along.

Caruthersville will still hold "Trunk or Treat," where children go from vehicle to vehicle in a parking lot picking goodies from trunks.
