The owner of Everhart's Sporting Goods has been arrested and charged with second degree arson for the 2011 New Year's Day fire at the store.

An indictment by the Cole County Grand Jury led to the arrest of 52-year-old Kurt Steidley. He was later released from the Warrensburg Police Department after posting a $25,000 cash-only bond.

The Jefferson City Fire Departmemnt responded to the fire at 7:46 p.m., Jan. 1, 2011. A fire found burning in the middle of the building filled the air with smoke. Firefighters extinguished the fire and requested an investigation into the fire’s cause.

The fire was investigated by JCFD, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

The business was not in operation at the time of the fire and had been closed since Dec. 24, 2010, citing tough economic times.
