(AP) -- JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Two Missouri agencies are again working together to replace thousands of trees knocked down during highway projects.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said Monday it will buy 250,000 seedlings from a Conservation Department nursery. Conservation officials will distribute the trees to youth groups and schools for planting.
This is the sixth year of Missouri's Trees for Tomorrow program. Officials say more than 2.5 million trees of roughly 60 varieties have been provided since the program started in 2007.
MoDOT Director Kevin Keith says construction of roads and bridges sometimes requires tree removals. Keith says the program allows experts to be involved in the work of replacing them.
