(AP) -- JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- More than a 100 people gathered on the lawn of the Missouri Capitol for a rally in which women pledged their support for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin.

Friday's rally was the second this week by a new women's coalition that is standing beside Akin after his remarks last month about women's bodies having ways of avoiding pregnancy from what he called "legitimate rape." Akin has repeatedly apologized and pressed forward with his challenge to Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill.

Speakers at Friday's rally praised what they described as Akin's strong "pro-life" positions.

But the event also drew protesters. About 40 people wearing pink shirts distributed by Planned Parenthood stood across the street chanting "rape is rape" as Akin spoke.
