INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) -- Independence police say a Missouri Department of Transportation motorist-assist worker was struck and killed while helping shut down Interstate 70 after an earlier crash.
(AP) --
Police spokesman Tom Gentry says officers and MoDOT workers were setting up cones at 2:50 a.m. Friday to route traffic around a four-car crash when a car struck the man.

The car then rammed into the worker's truck, causing it to burst into flames. The worker died at the scene and hasn't been identified. The driver of the vehicle that hit him was taken to a hospital.

Authorities initially reported that one person died in the earlier four-car crash on eastbound I-70 at the Missouri 291 ramp near Kansas City. But Gentry says one person was taken to a hospital, and there were no fatalities.
