Columbia community leaders continue to assess the impact of Georgia fans on their city.
Thousands of Bulldog fans came to Columbia this past weekend for Mizzou’s first Southeastern Conference football game.
Although the Tigers lost to Georgia by a score of 41 to 20, local business owners scored some cash from Georgia fans during this past weekend.
Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau officials said nearly every hotel and motel room was booked in Columbia and surrounding cities.
Tourism officials said Georgia fans also spent thousands of dollars at local businesses and restaurants.
CVB Executive Director Amy Schneider said, “A lot of the comments that we received back were comments from people saying how friendly Columbia was and how we’re a great addition to the SEC. I didn’t learn anything from that because I knew Columbia was friendly and I knew we’d do a great job in hosting these folks.”
Delta Airlines officials added extra flights at the Columbia Regional Airport this past weekend for Georgia fans.
Airline employees had no problems handling the extra passengers on their 50-seat jets.
City leaders hope they can learn from their first SEC game experience so they can make improvements for future SEC football games, including the visit from Alabama fans on October 13.
