The bureau has endorsed Republican candidates since 1982

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri Farm Bureau is keeping its endorsement of Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin after the Republican congressman made remarks about women's bodies being able to avoid pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."

A Farm Bureau spokesman told The Associated Press on Tuesday that members of its political action committee had voted to maintain their support. The group had endorsed Akin over Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill by a 99 percent vote just one month ago.

Akin has apologized repeatedly since his remarks about rape were aired Aug. 19 on a St. Louis television station. He has rejected calls from top Republicans to quit the race.

The Missouri Farm Bureau has always backed the Republican candidate since it began making Senate endorsements in 1982.
