If in doubt about a cantaloupe, throw it out
Jefferson City, Mo. – The Cole County Health Department (CCHD) is investigating a case of Salmonella that the State Public Health Lab (SPHL) has confirmed matches the outbreak strain associated with contaminated melons.
On August 1, the CCHD received notification that a Cole County resident tested positive for Salmonella Typhimurium, as confirmed by the SPHL. On August 17, the genetic fingerprint of the specimen was found to be a match for the outbreak strain associated with eating contaminated melon.
At this time, the case’s exposure to the contaminated melons is under investigation and cannot be confirmed.
The CCHD would like to remind the public to throw out any melons they suspect may have been grown in Indiana to avoid exposure to Salmonella. If you’re not sure where the melon you have came from, you can call the grocery store you purchased the melon from. Remember, if in doubt throw it out.
