(AP) -- The National Weather Service says Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has been designated as "StormReady" more than a year after a tornado caused millions of dollars in damage.

The Weather Service says the designation gives airport personnel improved communication and safety skills that could help save lives during future storms.

Weather Service spokesman Jim Kramper says Lambert worked with the service to meet guidelines for emergency operations planning and severe weather procedures. He says the program also evaluates weather forecast systems, communication procedures and facility signage.

A tornado that slammed the airport in April 2011 sent four people to hospitals with minor injuries. Others were treated at the scene for cuts blamed on flying glass.
