How would you feel if you bought a home in a subdivision with a lake and came home one day to find it drained?
Glenna Roberts lives in on the lake and said, "What was the point? Really, what was the point?"
Roberts and her neighbors used to have a picture-perfect lake view - -now they're left with dead fish floating in about a foot of water.
On Monday, the neighborhood watershed was drained by Rudy Dallmeyer, the man who started the subdivision and owns the lake.
Dallmeyer said the small lake isn't part of the subdivision.
But homes were built around the lake as if it was, and homeowners say when they built their homes they were lead to believe the lake would always be part of the neighborhood.
Keith Temmen said, "We've lived here 12 years and it's sad because you have expectations when you buy the lot and you build a house with an expectation that it was going to stay there is pretty sad."
Wednesday, the smell of rotting fish was apparent throughout the subdivision as neighbors looked on,.
"I'm devastated really. My grandchildren enjoy this lake. This is bad enough that we talked about moving," Roberts told us.
Some said they think Dallmeyer drained the lake out of spite. He shared a different reason.
"You get into a situation of liability you know, if somebody in the subdivision were to drown there, and they do they swim in a lake, and if they would drown I am strictly liable. So it was really a liability to me," Dammmeyer said.
Dallmeyer said the property is for sale and anyone is welcome to buy it.
The 3.5-acre lake on Wardsville Road is up for sale for $21,500.
Neighbors say they would like to buy it,they just wish it had not come to this.
