Peter Zekert received a Letter of Commendation from Columbia Fire Chief Charles Witt, Jr. for his actions on April 15, 2012.

Zekert was shopping at the Walmart located at 1201 Grindstone when he came upon a 66-year-old man experiencing cardiac arrest. Zeckert started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), continuing until emergency units arrived.

Zekert had prior training as a lifeguard and was prepared for the task.  However, what that training could not provide was the courage and self-sacrifice needed to come to the aid of one's fellow citizen.
