Hundreds of people gathered at the Missouri State Fairgrounds to honor our veterans.
It was the Missouri State Fair’s Military Appreciation Day.
The Missouri State Fair is underway and so is the admiration for Missouri’s military. The Patriotic Guard Riders rolled in the Mathewson Exhibition Center on motorcycles to kick off the event. Governor Jay Nixon was the keynote speaker.
Nixon said, “I ask that all of us continue to keep in our prayers those who are currently serving in our military as well as their families until they come home to us safely.”
The Governor and Missouri National Guard Adjutant General Stephen Danner presented the Governor’s Unit Citation to the Guard’s Agri-Business teams that have served in Afghanistan.
Danner said, “Through the centuries, the profession of arms has remained a noble and challenging vocation. It’s an honor to be here today to pay tribute the best military in the history of the world.”
The Fort Leonard Wood Joint Service Color Guard carried military flags in honor of those serving and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Missouri Agriculture Director Jon Hagler said, “We honor those with us today and that have come before us. Those prepared to answer the call of duty and those whose service continued until the heavenly clarion sounded.”
The crowd remembered each Missouri fallen soldier from the past year by name.
This is the 110th year for the Missouri State Fair. This year’s theme is… Celebrate Then and Wow. Those honoring our military say that theme is very appropriate because our brave men and women have been wowing us since the beginning of American history.
All veterans received free admission to the State Fair on appreciation day.
Their immediate family members got a fair ticket for one dollar.
