Community-based services support older members of Columbia
COLUMBIA, Mo. – On Tuesday, US News and World Report reported Columbia, Mo. as at fourth best small city in the country for aging. The study indicates Columbia provides high quality healthcare, educational opportunities, options for working seniors, transportation and the type of economy that works for seniors.
Columbia also provides a many community-based services to support an a gain population. Services like Boone County Council on Aging, Meals on Wheels, and MU Adult Day Connection. These organizations provide various kinds of support, whether for the family or care giver, for those facing barriers access or for those in falling into poverty. BCCA was established in 1973 as a grassroots, all-volunteer, group of citizens who felt is was important to identify and address the unmet needs of the county’s older adults. The Mission of Boone County Council on Aging (BCCA) is to provide a continuum of services that improve the quality of life for people 55 and older. In 2011, 1296 volunteers provided nearly 46,791 volunteer hours to over 1,200 seniors in the community through the support of generous individuals, the United Way, City of Columbia, Boone County and the Corporation of National Service.
