A natural grass fire destroyed a barn and caused several explosions on Wednesday morning in Northern Boone County.
Firefighters responded to a burning acre of land near the corner of North Route Z and Mount Zion Church Road shortly before 10:00 a.m.
The grass fire burned several hay bales and a barn.
Investigators said the explosions possibly came from some old tires and some small gas tanks inside the barn.
Firefighters had the flames under control before a 400 gallon tank of diesel fuel could cause any danger.
Windy and dry conditions gave firefighters some problems.
Boone County Fire District Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp said, “The fire obviously moves faster when the wind is blowing. As dry as these conditions are, it can spread very rapidly. We were in a position where we had to put a stop on the progression of that fire, which we were able to do very quickly. The barn is a total loss anyway. All we tried to do was to contain that and keep it from spreading to other structures.”
No one was injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
