Dock inspection regulations have been called into question after several deaths / KRCG 13
The recent string of electricity-related deaths near docks at the Lake of the Ozarks has the community mourning.
Many are questioning if their docks are safe and are calling on the Lake's energy supplier, Ameren, for answers.
Ameren says that all Lake counties have the same regulations in place regarding electrical wiring in boat docks.
Ameren recommends having area fire officials inspect docks if people have concerns. Representatives also said it should be one of the first things done after building a new dock.
"Once an applicant gets a dock permit, then they also have to seek out an electrical installation permit for the participating fire district," Jeff Green, an official with Ameren, said. "Those fire districts then go out and inspect that dock to make sure that they meet the guidelines that have been adopted by those individual fire districts."
Docks built before 2006 were not required to have permits, according to area fire districts.
Docks built after 2006 are required to have them only after getting the dock permit -- not on an annual basis.
They also warn people that adding anything to a dock after inspection can potentially change the safety environment of that dock.
