MARIES COUNTY -- An off-duty Highway Patrol trooper was at the center of a standoff between her ex-boyfriend and Maries County Sheriff's deputies.

Investigators say the trooper was held by her ex-boyfriend, Clifford Karst, of Warrenton, at gunpoint.

When deputies arrived, they heard a single gunshot.

The trooper exited the residence unharmed.

Deputies entered the home and found 42-year-old, Karst with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
