Teams of Boone County residents, business, and community partners are gathering at the Mizzou Student Recreation Center for the 18th annual overnight Relay for Life against cancer.

Al Buchanan is not a friend of cancer.  Al had more than 40 people in his life affected by the disease.  Some of those people were lost.  Doctors diagnosed Al with prostate cancer 3 years ago.  Al has volunteered at the Relay for Life of Boone County for the past 17 years.

Cancer survivor Al Buchanan said, “You’ll see a lot of crying and carrying on.  There’s also a lot of laughing and celebrating.  I really like that part of the relay.”

Relay for Life of Boone County celebrates the lives of those who have had cancer, remembers those lost, and fights back against the disease.

The overnight event includes games, music, great food, and live entertainment.  This year’s goal is to raise $160,000.  Teams raised more than $100,000 prior to the event.

Event Chair Lindsey Testerman said, “It’s the one event where communities can come together and raise the big bulk of money that goes to support everything from advocacy programs and different parts of the mission of the American Cancer Society.”

The relay is open to the public through Sunday, until closing ceremonies take place at 5am.

Relay for Life events also took place Friday night in Audrain, Callaway and Morgan counties.
