Original story:

Holts Summit Police are investigating a toddler’s death.

Just after 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, emergency crews responded to a home on South Summit Drive. A caller told the dispatcher a two-year-old child was blue and not breathing. The caller also said the child was “beyond any help”.

Callaway County Ambulance District and the Holts Summit Fire Protection District crews found the child dead in a playpen-type enclosure inside the residence.

That’s when the Medical Examiner’s Office was contacted and personnel from the office responded to the scene to investigate the death. An autopsy is pending.

Holts Summit Police Department investigators questioned the two adults who were at the residence.

They told investigators they put the child to bed sometime between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Tuesday. When they checked on the child at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday; the child was lying on his back, not breathing, and was blue.

During further questioning, both adults admitted to using Methamphetamines the previous day. Investigators removed several needles, a baggy containing a white powdery substance, a baggy containing a brown powdery substance and other items from the residence. The items were sent to the state crime lab for testing.

The two adults were taken into custody. They’re being held in the Callaway County Jail, pending formal charges. Their names have not been released.

The remaining child in the residence was placed into protective custody by workers from Missouri Social Services, Children's Division.
