A vehicle rolled over near the intersection of I-70 Drive Northwest and Barnwood Drive in Columbia just after 9:00 a.m. Friday.

While the Columbia Fire Department were on the way to the accident, several 911 callers reported that the driver was trapped in the vehicle.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find a silver Toyota Yaris on its side in a drainage ditch.

Fire fighters made contact with the only occupant of the vehicle, an 84-year-old female, who said she was wearing her seat belt. Responders began emergency care while other fire fighters used support struts to stabilize the vehicle.

It took approximately fifteen minutes to remove the victim from the wreckage. She was then transported by ambulance to University Hospital.

Two fire engines and a rescue squad responded to the crash.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds all residents that seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
