A standoff ended Wednesday night after Jefferson City Police spent nearly three hours surrounding an apartment building.
Officers were called to 2200 block of Weathered Rock Road around 4 p.m.
Authorities say the 61-year-old caller was agitated and wanted to hurt himself.
Jannis Evans said, "He's a very quiet guy, he never bothers anyone, he keeps to himself".
Neighbors describe the man, who kept police at bay for nearly three hours, as extremely friendly. They said he is an ex-marine and retired corrections officer, and he would never hurt anyone.
Evans said her neighbor has had a hard time since his son joined the military, "I think he is just very depressed right now, it's just sad because he doesn't have anybody, he doesn't have anybody".
About 20 SWAT team members stood by while negotiators talked the man into surrendering.
Evans said, "They were on the phone talking to him a lot and they finally got him to come out and they brought him out in handcuffs which was pretty traumatic for me and I just know he is very depressed".
In the end police say it was a successful, yet bitter sweet operation.
Capt. Bob Cynova said, "The subject is not hurt, none of my officers are hurt and it's a win win situation because he is getting the help he needs".
Police say man came out of the house on his own free will, he was unarmed.
He was then taken to a local hospital for treatment, at this time no charges are anticipated.
