Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid’s FastCAT bus route plan is up for a first reading before the city council tonight.
McDavid said the proposed bus route is geared toward students but would be available to all residents.
About 75% of Columbia’s city bus riders are students.
City buses would make a 30 minute loop near Downtown Columbia and surrounding campuses under the FastCAT system.
The mayor’s plan would cost up to $400,000 a year.
McDavid said, “It depends on how many buses we have. It depends on how late we run them. It’s going to depend on how many riders we have. We’re going to put as many buses out there as we can afford. I think it’s going to be a system that will be in demand by students. I look for it to be very popular.”
FastCAT buses would have a GPS tracking system.
Riders would be able to track the route with a free smart phone application.
A final council vote is expected on June 18.
McDavid hopes to have FastCAT in operation on August 15.
