Earlier this afternoon, several young women from all across the state were awarded the highest honor by the Girl Scouts.

The Gold Awards are given to the girls who show exceptional sense of leadershiup, organizational skills, and sense of community.

The awarding ceremony took place in the State Capital building's House Chamber, and getting to this level, Girl Scouts officials said, was no easy task.

"They do a lot of leadership development, career development and exploration. They have to do some badge work as well. And the, their culminating project is a very labor intensive community service project about something that's important to them," said Anne Hyde, spokeswoman for the Girls Scouts of Missouri Heartland.

In addition to the Gold Awards, each girl received a surprise lifetime membership to the Girls Scouts organization.
