Summer is unofficially here, and although you may just want to enjoy a care-free day at the pool, others could take advantage of you if you let your guard down.

Local law enforcement agencies say they usually see more home burglaries and car thefts in the summer.

Things like electronics, purses and even precious metals attract thieves, so they urge you to make sure you have those items stored in a safe place.

"Lock your cars, police around your homes. If you've got metals that are laying around, take them and recycle them yourself. There are a lot of agencies paying for it. You might as well have the money, rather than someone stealing it from you," said Cole County Sheriff Greg White.

Officers say they don't generally see a major spike in violent crime during the summer months.
