The Columbia Fire Department said an electrical fire caused an estimated $4,000 in damage at an apartment building.

It happened just before 7 p.m. Wednesday night on Texas Avenue, near the intersection of Creasy Springs Road.

When crews got to the scene they found smoke coming from the common doorway of the two-story, four-plex.

Firefighters forced their way into a vacant apartment and discovered a fire in its utility room. They then extinguished the fire with a dry chemical fire extinguisher.

Firefighters said the fire started in the apartment's electrical breaker panel.
