JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- Cole County’s circuit clerk has resigned.

Brenda Umstattd submitted her resignation to the Governor’s office early Wednesday. It takes effect immediately.

Umstattd’s resignation comes after a report from the state auditor found the Circuit Clerk’s office is putting hundreds of thousands of dollars at risk because of a lack of financial controls. In a news release from the Circuit Court, the audit report is referred to as “very serious” and says it “reflects numerous deficiencies in the operation of the Circuit Clerk’s Office.”

Cole County Court officials said they are dedicated to addressing all areas of concern and restoring confidence from citizens of Cole County. Court officials already have a few steps they are going to take, including training all clerks and focusing on proper accounting for all funds.

State Auditor Tom Schweich will review the office again. Court officials hope the follow up will reflect the changes made in the Circuit Clerk’s Office.

While officials look for Umstattd’s replacement, Presiding Judge Patricia Joyce will act as the appoint authority for the Circuit Clerk.
