Tuesday is Election Day and that means Missourians get to voice their opinions in hundreds of races.

In Jefferson City, voters in Ward 5 will select someone to fill Dave Griffith's vacant city council seat. Griffith resigned from the Council in December to take a job with the American Red Cross.

Bob Gilbert, Larry D. Henry Jr., J. Scott Stacey and Sharon Koechling-Burnett are all running for the vacated 5th Ward Seat.

In Columbia, voters will fill two council seats and vote on two school tax issues.

In the 2nd ward, there are three people running for the seat Councilman Jason Thornhill is not seeking reelection for. Mike Atkinson, Bill Pauls and Michael Trapp are all running for that open seat.

In the 6th ward, two-tern incumbent Barbara Hoppe is seeking reelection. Bill Tillotson, a member of Columbia’s Planning and Zoning Commission, is seeking to challenge Hoppe.

The first Columbia school tax issue is a 40-cent tax levy that's expected to generate about $8 Million. That would help cover losses from state funding and pay for new teachers and current programs.

The second measure is a $50 Million bond issue that would help eliminate the need for trailer classrooms. If both issues pass, the average Columbia homeowner would pay about $100 in additional annual taxes.

In Eldon, voters will elect a mayor and several aldermen. Running for the 4-year-term of mayor are: Ronald Bly, a former Eldon Mayor, John A. Holland, the current mayor and Craig Ward Bond.

Southern Boone County Firefighters are asking voters to pass a $2 million bond issue on the April 3 ballot.

The proposal would be an extension of an expiring bond issue that funds the Southern Boone County Fire Protection District.

If passed, fire officials would replace a 20-year-old fire truck, add more bedrooms to their Ashland fire station and buy some surplus MoDOT property for additional training.

If approved, the cost of emergency fire, rescue and medical services would be about $75 a year for someone owning a home worth $100,000.

That compares to $77 for the expiring bond issue.

Centralia voters will decide in April on two issues to pay to expand the town's library.

They 15 cent tax levy and bond issue would pay to build a new addition to the library which has seen usage of books and computers grow.

Library Director Patt Olsen says the bond issue would raise about $800,000, and the expansion would benefit people of all ages.

Taxes would go up. In addition to the 15 cent tax levy, the bond issue would raise taxes by 18.75 cents.

Morgan County residents will decide on a school tax levy for the Stover district in April.

This levy would be a $1.25 hike.  Superintendent John French says the district levy currently sits at the state minimum and has not been raised for 20 years. If approved the new levy would total $4 per $100 of assessed valuation.

Money from the levy would pay to retain teachers, maintain school buildings and pay operating expenses.

Polls opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.
