HOUSTON, MO. (AP) -- A multivehicle pileup in southern Missouri has killed two people and injured five others.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the crash happened Thursday afternoon on U.S. 63 just north of the Texas County town of Houston.
The patrol said a tractor-trailer failed to stop and rammed into the rear of a Buick that was stopped in traffic. The force of the collision caused the Buick to rear-end a second stopped vehicle, which then rear-ended a third stopped vehicle. The Buick also was pushed into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head-on.
Both people who were killed were in the Buick. The patrol identified them as Janet and Ralph Hoffman, both 78-year-old Salem residents. Two people were flown to a Springfield hospital and the others who were injured were treated at a Houston hospital.
