Over a decade ago, Hinkson creek in Columbia was found to be in violation of a federal law known as the Clean Water Act.Tonight, officials from several agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, met up to discuss what they plan to do to clean up the creek.
They also went into the science behind getting the water clean.
"That science will then feed into decisions that we need to make about controlling discharges through pollution permits, better land use decisions in the county and the city, things the university can do across it's footprint to control runoff in the creek...all these together will lead to actions that have to clean this creek up," said Karl Brooks, the Region 7 Administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency.
The city of Columbia, Boone County, and the University of Missouri are also involved in the collaborative efforts to clean the creek.
Last year, the EPA created a measurement that determines the maximum amount of pollutants allowed in Hinkson creek on a day-to-day basis.
