Update: Wednesday, March 21st at 1:25 p.m.:

The man arrested after Tuesday's hostage situation in Osage County has not been charged for that incident.

47-year-old Michael Kitson is being held in the Cole County Jail.

Original Story:

A hostage situation in Freeburg put local schools under lockdown Tuesday afternoon.

Freeburg Police said a woman called 911 and said she had been held hostage in her home for days.

The woman said her boyfriend came to her home on Chesnut Street in Freeburg where she, her mother and daughter were staying. The man wouldn’t let her leave for days.

Tuesday afternoon, the boyfriend let the woman and her daughter go. That's when she called police. He did not allow the woman’s parapalegic mother to leave. The woman said her boyfriend told them they could go to the store, but if they told police “bad things would happen”.

Osage County authorities arrived shortly after the woman called police, and started two hours of negotiations. That's when the woman’s boyfriend, 47-year-old Michael Dewayne Kitson, surrendered without incident and was arrested.

Police said there were multiple weapons in the home, but Kitson didn’t try and use any against law enforcement.

Kitson was already wanted on multiple charges. He had warrants out of Cole and Phelps County. He’s currently in the Cole County Jail. Charges have not yet been filed from Tuesday’s hostage incident.

During the hostage situation, area schools went into a lockdown mode as a safety precaution and re-routed school buses.
