COLUMBIA -- Police are investigating a shooting in Columbia early Friday morning.

Officers found a 41-year-old white woman with a gunshot wound in the lower abdomen area at the Gerbes Supermarket on Paris Road.

The woman was taken to the hospital and was unable to provide any information to authorities before she went into surgery.

Officers watched the video surveillance at Gerbes which showed the victim walking through the parking lot and standing at the front door.

In a news release the Columbia Police Department said the video surveillance showed the victim alone the entire time.

They said she appeared to fall down near the front doors at Gerbes which is where employees found her lying as they walked out.

Employees told officers they did not hear any shots fired.

Officers found a hand gun in the woman’s coat pocket but said they can’t confirm if it weapon was used to cause the injuries.

Investigators talked with friends and family to find out her whereabouts prior to the

shooting.

The friends allowed law enforcement to search of their home, but they didn’t find anything.
