There was heated discussion at Fulton City Hall Wednesday about plans to renew the Ameren Missouri's license to operate it's nuclear power plant in Callaway county for another 20 years.

The Missouri Coalition for the Environment says Ameren's application for the license included a lot of technical jargon that most folks wouldn't understand.

That group has safety concerns.

Ed Smith is the Safety Director of the Missouri Coalition for the Environment.

"Our goal is one of safety. If our intervention, in the process, helps create the safety threshold of a license extention that we don't believe will be revoked, then we have done our job," Smith says.

Supporters of the license renewal say they have had no concerns about the plant in the three decades it has been on line.

They emphasize the jobs Ameren has provided, as well as the company's support of local non-profit organizations.
