COLUMBIA, MO. -- An unusual boat race will soon help feed hungry people in Mid-Missouri.
The MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources is teaming up with the Food Bank for the first annual Float Your Boat for the Food Bank Cardboard Regatta.
Racers are building homemade boats out of cardboard, glue, tape and paint.
Judges will present a Titanic Award for the best sinking ship at Philips Lake Park next door to the new catholic high school.
Organizers are asking for cash donations from race participants.
MU College of Agriculture Spokeswoman Michelle Hall said, “There 3 ways to get involved. We are welcoming teams of families, organizations or corporations to build their own boat to float out here on the lake. There are sponsorships available. We are also looking for volunteers.”
Food Bank Spokeswoman Rachel Ellersieck said, “This year, we’re just hoping to get as much as we can to raise awareness about hunger and this new event. We’re hoping that it lasts for years to come.”
The Float Your Boat for the Food Bank Cardboard Regatta takes place at 9 a.m. on Saturday April 21.
