A former employee of Jefferson Bank in Jefferson City admitted to embezzling more than $487,000 from the bank and her boss and another $54,000 from another employer. On Monday, Kelley Lee Steiner, 52, of Jefferson City, pleaded guilty.

Steiner served as vice president and secretary to the board of directors from June 1999 to November 2008. She also was the personal executive assistant to former president Harold Westhues.

Steiner admitted to taking $487,199 from both the bank and Westhues’ personal checking account. About $378,000 of that came from her boss’s checking account. An audit of Westhues’ account found Steiner diverted the money for her own personal use by writing checks to herself. She used the money to pay her personal credit card bills and her children’s college expenses.

She also pleaded guilty to embezzling $54,000 while employed at Modern Business Systems.

Steiner could face a sentence of up to 33 years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine up to $1,250,000 and an order to pay back what she stole.

A sentencing hearing for Steiner has not been set.
