The Missouri National Guard spent $117,000 last year to fly Gov. Jay Nixon and members of his administration over flooding and tornado sites.

Taxpayers will foot the bill, but the cost may not all come from the state treasury.

The National Guard has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cover 75 percent of the tab.

Details of the flights were obtained by The Associated Press under an open-records request to the National Guard.

They show Nixon took about 10 helicopter flights between April and July to view flooding in southeast and northwest Missouri and to survey tornado damage in Joplin.

Lawmakers included wording in this year's budget prohibiting agencies from paying for Nixon's flights. But they included an exception for the Department of Public Safety, which includes the Guard.
