Today Catholics and other Christians around Mid-Missouri received their ashes for Ash Wedneday, marking the beginning of the Lenten season.
Folks came out in droves to churches across the viewing area. Each person received an ash mark on their forehead, which is symbolic of taking repentence to God.
During Lent, many people decide to give up something that they consider a luxury for 40 days, and many avoid eating any kind of meat on fridays other than fish.
Lent will end on Easter Sunday, where the church will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
