On February 17, 2012 at approximately 2:03 p.m. Columbia Police officers responded to a report of shots being fired in the area of Banks Avenue and Worley Street.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, but one car was damaged by gunfire. Investigators responded to the scene and collected shell casings.

No arrests have been made.

Then, at approximately 5:26 p.m. officers were dispatched to the area of Providence Road and Austin Avenue for a second report of shots being fired.

Multiple callers described shots being fired from a vehicle driving through the area.

Responding officers were unable to locate a suspect vehicle or evidence of the shots.

On February 18, 2012, about 12:35 a.m. officers were dispatched to the area of10 Nifong Boulevard for reports of multiple shots being fired in the area.

Reports described an exchange of gunfire between someone on the parking lot of Southside Pizza, 3908 Peachtree Drive, and a vehicle driving through the lot.

Responding officers did not locate any suspects, but were able to recover several shell casings as evidence.

A building in the area was damaged by gunfire, but no injuries were reported and no arrests have been made at this time.

As the frequency of these incidents increases, police say so does the danger to the community.

The incidents happened in vibrant, populated areas of our city: a central city neighborhood with frequent pedestrian traffic was targeted mid-afternoon; a busy, well-traveled road near a school and several busineses was victimized at rush hour; and patrons at several popular bars and restaurants were put in danger near closing time early this morning.

Police need the community’s help to put an end to these senseless acts of violence.

Anyone with information about these incidents, or any gang-related activity, is encouraged to contact police, or call Crime Stoppers at (573) 875-TIPS to remain anonymous.

Every piece of information is important.
