COLUMBIA, MO. -- Organizers of this year’s Missouri State Wrestling Championships at Mizzou Arena said their event is having a huge economic impact on Columbia.

Missouri State High School Activities Association Communications Director Jason West said more than 25,000 athletes, family members and coaches are spending a lot of money at local businesses.

West does not have an exact number, but he said the wrestling championships are bringing hundreds of thousands of dollars into our local economy.

Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Amy Schneider said every Columbia hotel room has been booked for the 3-day event that ends Saturday.

Schneider said participants are also spending loads of cash at local gas stations, restaurants and shopping malls.

The annual event is booked in Columbia through 2018.
