COLUMBIA -- Fire officials say a cooking fire caused thousands of dollars in damage at a Columbia Duplex.
It happened just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1000-block of Hardin Street.
When crews got to the scene they forced the door open and found smoke banked down to knee level in the unoccupied half of the duplex.
During the investigation they determined the fire had occurred on a stove and had damaged the stove, walls and cabinets above it.
The Columbia Fire Department said it appeared that the fire had gone out prior to the arrival of fire crews.
Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and said the cause of the fire was from unattended cooking.
The duplex is owned by Newton Riley of Columbia said they had just finished cleaning and painting that side of the duplex a week or so ago.
There were no injuries and AFM Bach issued a preliminary damage estimate of $5,000.
