BOONVILLE, MO. -- St. Louis area businessman and Republican candidate for governor Dave Spence was on a 7-city tour visiting with Mid-Missourians on Friday.
The media spotlight was recently on Spence when he misled voters into believing he had a degree in economics when actually has a degree in home economics.
Spence met with supporters at Boonville’s Route B Café to talk about his background and why he is running for governor.
Spence said Governor Jay Nixon’s leadership has failed to face the state’s financial challenges.
The self-proclaimed conservative says he can defeat Nixon in November, even though Spence has only raised about half of Nixon’s $5 million campaign fund.
Spence said, “I have met some great people. You just can’t sit at home and expect to earn people’s respect and earn people’s votes. You have to get out there and hustle. We’ve put about 8,000 miles in the car since mid-December. We need to visit all 114 counties and talk to 5.9 million people and get our message across. We can get to a higher level.”
Governor Nixon’s supporters said Spence is not a true conservative after he made some recent comments on a Missouri radio station.
Spence said President Obama’s stimulus package “Saved our bacon”.
The only other Republican in the governor’s race is former Kansas City attorney Bill Randles.
