First Lieutenant David Johnson of Wisconsin was killed in action Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Defense said Johnson was on foot patrol when an improvised explosive device exploded and fatally wounded him.

Thursday, students and staff at Evangel University in Springfield celebrated the life and legacy of 24-year old soldier.

He graduated from the college in 2010.

Johnson’s friends said he will be remembered for his smile, for his kindness, and for helping others.
